Social Skills/Creative PlayPreschoolers have the opportunity to engage in open-ended art activities and play that encourage the development of both social skills and creative play. Themes such as "The Pet Rescue Center" allow children to take on the roles of manager and rescuer as they negotiate fees and how to care for pets. In addition to theme-related activities, art supplies, blocks, dress-ups, and other open-ended toys are all readily available. Children are supported in their play by caring adults who play alongside when needed, but also step back as appropriate to let children problem solve their own solutions.

MovementHave you ever noticed that preschoolers need to move? SWPCC honors that need in many ways. The preschool has two rooms and children are free to move between them during our choice time. We have a large community room space that can be set up for obstacle courses, parachute play, and other movement activities including plays and music. We spend about an hour of our day outside. Our big trees give a natural feeling to our outside space. Spending time in our natural area and garden give children plenty of space to roam, run, and have fun.

Kindergarten ReadinessAt SWPCC, kindergarten readiness is taken seriously by the teachers. The teachers' knowledge of the skills necessary for success in kindergarten -coupled with developmentally appropriate practice - leads to happy and engaged children. At first glance, it seems like play. At second glance, it seems like play with a purpose. You won't see our kiddos sitting at desks - you will see them moving, building, and talking with one another. Our children leave our preschool writing their names, counting, patterning, and listening at group time as well as other necessary skills. They learn the necessary skills to succeed in subsequent academic settings, all through play and playful experiences.

Teacher Amanda
In my life I have always been drawn to the profession of Teaching and working with children. Teaching is a creative outlet that lets me be a kid again! Our unique preschool program gives many opportunities for children and families to grow, learn and connect with each other individually and as a community. As a teacher at SWPCC Summer Camp, and in the Preschool and Toddler classrooms I get to nurture these relationships with children and families throughout the community.
I am a native Oregonian and attended the University of Oregon where I earned a degree in Anthropology. After some travel, I attended Pacific University where I earned my Masters in Teaching. I’ve spent time teaching in the early elementary grades and working with preschool age children teaching them social-emotional skills through play. My family were Coop members for three years while my daughter attended. I also had the pleasure of serving as SWPCC Co-Chair and Teacher Substitute.
I enjoy the outdoors and my family loves to hike and downhill ski. In my spare time I love to read, color and spend time with family and friends.
