Making Friends During PlaySWPCC helps even our youngest children develop friendships. We nurture the basic curiosity and interest that toddlers have in one another, and teach specific skills to support making friends. We provide many daily opportunities for taking turns, listening to others, joining in groups, asserting oneself, handling conflict, and showing empathy for others.

Learning About Language Through PlayThroughout the toddler day we use books, stories, dramatic play, signs, songs, rhymes, and specific vocabulary to impart the building blocks for successful reading and use of language. The children listen to books at group time and during meals. They practice holding books, turning the pages, and reading to friends, even taking turns pretending to be the teacher. We play letter- and name-recognition games, write messages and signs, and give the children the materials to do their own writing and make their own books.

Playing with Early Math and ScienceDynamic toddler play is full of early math and science! We use familiar objects and events from the classroom and playgrounds to notice, wonder and explore. We work at counting (forward and backward), and act directly with toys and materials to learn concepts such as more/less, matching, time, size, shape, patterns. Through handling toys and acting on materials, the children learn the vocabulary of science: ideas, predict, plan, investigate, collect, compare, organize, and experiment. When the children’s questions and ideas are treated with respect and curiosity, the entire group learns, and interests deepen.

Each day in the Toddler Room is a wonder and an adventure! I love to discover and explore new ideas with the Toddlers as we read stories, sing songs and play throughout the day. When their faces light up with a new idea or word that may surprise them, these moments are truly delightful! It fills my heart to watch the parents engage daily with not only their own child, but other children who they come to adore. Fostering empathy and compassion for one another through kindness and friendship is exciting work!
Participating in the growth of a child as a parent at Southwest Parent Child Collective has been an extraordinary experience. So extraordinary, that it inspired me to earn a Master's of Arts in Education at George Fox University. Graduating in 2020 provided an opportunity to adapt and peek through new doors. Both of my children spent their early education at SWPCC, with my youngest graduating from the SWPCC in June of 2020. After 8 years as a co-op parent, board member and membership coordinator, it was an organic transition to the Toddler Room Teacher role for the 2021-22 school year. I knew where my heart had been and where it was meant to linger longer. My passion for this community and the depth of the relationships that enrich the lives of our families has a ripple effect that continues to prove how the strength of community can endure.
Spending my days with these bright minds and dedicated families seeking new experiences and insights is so much fun! We play together, laugh, read, think and find new ways to express the imagination. Art as a way to express individuality and cultivate confidence is nurtured daily, and I am so thankful to have the opportunity to bring art and process to the Toddler Room.
My family keeps me very busy and we stay active. As a native Oregonian, my favorite activities are hiking, skiing, the arts, music, cooking and canning, gardening and camping.
